Loki's Prints

informatioN for ouR custoRerS

On this page, our customers will discover a relatively exhaustive description of everything to do with the development, production and sale of Vintage & Anarchist prints by Loki Gwynbleidd.

INSPIRATION.

The prints presented in this shop are original creations influenced by the aesthetics of the second half of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. Press and commercial engravings and lithographs from these periods form the main inspiration for Loki Gwynbleidd's artistic work.

COMMITMENT.

The defence of marginalised and exploited people, the promotion of mutual aid and social justice and the destruction of productivist, capitalist, reactionary and domineering ideals have always been at the heart of the Vintage & Anarchist Propaganda.

All the works sold in this shop have a progressive or revolutionary theme or symbolism.

DESIGN

With rare exceptions, models for linocuts and cyanotypes are designed on the computer before being reproduced on the printing media. Printing forms for letterpress are produced directly with the printing equipment, making trials and adjustments until the final composition is obtained.

TECHNIQUES

Three techniques are used to create our prints: linocut, letterpress and cyanotype.

Linocut and letterpress are forms of relief printing: an inked stamp - carved on a block for linocut, composed from movable characters and plates for letterpress - is used to reproduce the visuals.

Cyanotype is a photographic process: a negative - drawings on transparent film in our case - is placed on sensitised paper which is exposed to light and then treated to reveal the image.

PAPERS.

Most of our prints are printed on fairly thick art paper (185g/m² at least). This choice, which sets us apart from some of our competitors, is partly due to material requirements. It also allows us to produce prints with a more solid appearance.

However, some linocuts are produced on paper collected from old books or on kraft paper.

INKS & REAGENTS

The inks used for letterpress and linocuts are water-washable emulsified oil inks. They guarantee perfect pigmentation and print hold and do not require the use of toxic solvents during the printing process.

Cyanotype reagents are relatively non-toxic, one being used as a food additive. The final cyanotype pigment - Prussian blue - is stable.

PRODUCTION TIME.

For linocut printing, it takes several hours or even several days to design and then engrave the visual on the printing block. After this, printing takes between 30 seconds and 1m30 between inking, paper imposition and the press run. Drying takes at least a day.

Typographic composition is faster - in the order of a few minutes - but sometimes requires readjustments. Printing and drying times are comparable to those for linocuts.

The creation of cyanotype models varies greatly depending on the complexity of the drawings. Next, it takes between 3 and 4 minutes for exposure and rinsing. Drying takes half a day, but it takes another half a day under a binding press to produce flat prints.

LIMITED EDITIONS.

As far as possible - conservation of the matrices - there are no limited editions of the cyanotypes and linocuts presented in this shop. Only a few typographic models using common elements are distributed in limited quantities.

This policy is deliberately put in place to enable our artistic creations to be shared as widely as possible and to guarantee a constant cost for our prints while reducing the speculative risk on our products.

CUSTOMISATION.

For reasons of production methods, cost and working time, Loki Gwynbleidd does not make bespoke orders for its handmade prints.

Note: personalised digital creations are sometimes available. Find out more here and here.
